Blog Post: Having Fun and Living Joy

Kids are always ready to have fun.  They are always ready for a new game, a new toy, sledding down a steep hill, anything that gives a feeling of novelty and excitement.  I share that love of fun, as most adults do. I really delight in seeing our students playing, inventing and simply having a good time with their friends.  I’m a bit of a natural goofball myself, and like to have fun with them, and make them laugh. That being said, having fun is not my purpose, nor is it theirs (even if they don’t always realize that yet). Children have to experience something deeper than fun, they need to experience joy.

Fun is fickle.  Joy is lasting.  Fun ends when the activity ends, and fades when you get tired, or hungry or your friend goes home.  Joy stays with you throughout the hours and the days, and can make any challenge or hardship bearable.  Fun needs energy to keep going.  Joy is the energy to keep going.  Cupcakes are fun; healthy food is a joy. Fun helps adults remember what it feels like to be a kid, and; joy helps children sense what life will demand of them when childhood ends. Taking our kids to the beach is fun.  Watching them graduate high school is joy.

We work hard to make our classes fun, because fun is a powerful gateway to learning; but our goal is joy.  Teaching and serving all of you has been our joy, and we are grateful to all of you for sharing with us and for inspiring us. We wish everyone a holiday season full of fun, replete with joy, and blessed with peace.

With gratitude, Andy and Hester
